This may be one of the most complex questions.
What woodcarving tools should I buy?
Whether you're new to wood carving or experienced, good tools are needed! Please do not waste your money on cheap carving tools. There are many tools available. Do not buy them just because they look affordable. Carving is supposed to be relaxing and not hard work. Begin carving with proper tools.

You got your tools and they are yours. But that doesn't mean you should be scared of them or misuse them. They will last longer if you take good care of them, so here is some advice on how to do this:
– If You are a beginner and never carved before, step number one would be: Learn as much as possible about your hand tools and how they work before using them! If there's something that doesn't seem right, watch woodcarving video lessons at my school of wood carving about tools and sharpening again and again until you understand what's going on. This is especially important when it comes to sharpening your gouges and chip carving knife — you could damage the blade or ruin its edge by using anything other than a proper sharpening stone or sharpening machine. I am talking a lot in my video workshops about sharpening.
How can you safely use your tools?
– Make sure to think about safety whenever you use chisels and gouges for wood carving!
If you don't feel safe, put on safety gloves when using woodworking tools! Traditional woodcarvers rarely use power tools, except to prepare basswood or another carvable wood. Safety for woodworkers typically involves thinking about power tools. Hand tools can also pose similar dangers.
I am a professional woodcarver and I know what I am talking about. Just ask me how I know. Starting out in wood carving, you don't dwell on it; you just grab a knife and whittle. Whittling is just one kind of wood carving; there are several more. High relief carving, low relief carving, carving in the round, etc. If you want to learn wood carving, check my lessons; I teach all types.
Storing your tools properly
Keep your tools clean! Rust is a common issue with woodcarving tools. To avoid it, store your tools in a dry place. Do not put them in the garage if you live somewhere humid. Also, apply machine oil to prevent rust. Once in a while, wipe your chisels with an oily rag. Your tools should last for many years. (Some of my tools are 300 years old)

Work on a simple design first.
Initiate with something easy
Concentrate on the design's form
Try it out on a scrap piece of wood first
Use a pattern to guide you
