What woodcarving tools should I buy?
No matter if you're starting wood carving or have done it before, good tools are necessary! Don't waste your money on cheap tools. There are a lot of tools available in the market. Do not buy them just because they look affordable. Carving is meant to be relaxing and shouldn't be difficult. Begin carving with proper tools.

You got your tools and they are yours. But that doesn't mean you should be scared of them or misuse them. They will last longer if you take good care of them, so here is some advice on how to do this:
– If You are a beginner and never carved before, step number one would be: Learn as much as possible about your hand tools and how they work before using them! If there's something that doesn't seem right, watch woodcarving video lessons at my school of wood carving about tools and sharpening again and again until you understand what's going on. This is especially important when it comes to sharpening your gouges and chip carving knife — you could damage the blade or ruin its edge by using anything other than a proper sharpening stone or sharpening machine. I am talking a lot in my video workshops about sharpening.
How should you use your tools safely?
– Safety should always be your top priority when using chisels and gouges for wood carving!
If you feel unsafe, wear safety gloves when working with woodworking tools! Traditional woodcarvers rarely use power tools, except to prepare basswood or another carvable wood. For woodworkers, safety is usually linked with power tools. But hand tools could be as dangerous as power tools.
I am a trained woodcarver, and I have the knowledge. Feel free to ask me how I know. At the beginning of your wood carving journey, you don't consider much; you just take your knife and start carving. Whittling is just one type of wood carving; there are many more. High relief, low relief, and round carving. If you want to become a carver, check my lessons; I cover the full spectrum of wood carving types.
How should you store your tools?
Keep your tools clean! Rust is a common issue with woodcarving tools. To avoid it, store your tools in a dry place. Do not put them in the garage if you live somewhere humid. Also, apply machine oil to prevent rust. Once in a while, wipe your chisels with an oily rag. Your tools should last for many years. (Some of my tools are 300 years old)
