This might be one of the hardest questions.
What are the best woodcarving tools to get?
Whether you are new to wood carving or have been doing it for a while, having good tools is essential! Please do not waste your money on cheap carving tools. There are a lot of tools available in the market. Avoid buying them simply because they are affordable. Carving should be enjoyable and not a struggle. Kick off your wood carving with quality tools.

You got your tools and they are yours. But that doesn't mean you should be scared of them or misuse them. They will last longer if you take good care of them, so here is some advice on how to do this:
– If you are new to woodcarving and have never tried it before, the first step is to learn all you can about your hand tools and how they work before using them! If something seems off, watch the woodcarving video lessons at my wood carving school about tools and sharpening over and over until you get it. This is very important for sharpening your gouges and chip carving knife — you could harm the blade or mess up its edge if you use anything other than the right sharpening stone or machine. I discuss this a lot in my video workshops.
How should you use your tools safely?
– Always think about safety when working with wood carving tools like chisels and gouges!
If you feel unsafe, wear safety gloves when working with woodworking tools! Traditional woodcarvers rarely use power tools, except to prepare basswood or another carvable wood. Safety for woodworkers typically involves thinking about power tools. Hand tools might be just as unsafe as power tools.
I am a skilled woodcarver, and I understand this well. Just ask me how I know. At the beginning of your wood carving journey, you don't consider much; you just take your knife and start carving. Whittling is just one kind of wood carving; there are several more. High relief carving, low relief carving, round carving, and so on. If you want to become a carver, check my lessons; I cover the full spectrum of wood carving types.
Storing your tools properly
Keep your tools clean! Rust is a common issue with woodcarving tools. To avoid it, store your tools in a dry place. Do not put them in the garage if you live somewhere humid. Also, apply machine oil to prevent rust. Once in a while, wipe your chisels with an oily rag. Your tools should last for many years. (Some of my tools are 300 years old)
