This is probably one of the most difficult question.
What woodcarving tools should I buy?
Whether you are new to wood carving or have been doing it for a while, having good tools is essential! Save your money from being wasted on cheap tools. There are many tools available. Don't purchase them merely because they are inexpensive. Carving is supposed to be relaxing and not hard work. Begin wood carving with good tools.

The tools you have are yours since you purchased them. This doesn't mean you should be scared of them or treat them poorly. They will have a longer life if you maintain them well, so here's some guidance on how to do it:
– If you're new and haven't carved before, the first step is to learn everything you can about your hand tools and how they work before using them! If something doesn't seem right, rewatch the woodcarving video lessons at my school of wood carving on tools and sharpening until you understand. This is really important when it comes to sharpening your gouges and chip carving knife — you could damage the blade or ruin its edge with anything other than the proper sharpening stone or machine. I talk a lot about sharpening in my video workshops.
How should you use your tools safely?
– Always think about safety when working with wood carving tools like chisels and gouges!
If you don't feel safe, put on safety gloves when using woodworking tools! Most traditional woodcarvers don't use power tools; they just use them to prepare basswood or other carvable wood. Power tools come to mind for woodworkers when they think of safety. Hand tools can also pose similar dangers.
I am a skilled woodcarver, and I understand this well. Just ask me how I know. When you first start wood carving, you don't think about it; you simply take your knife and carve. Whittling is just one type of wood carving; there are many more. High relief carving, low relief carving, carving in the round, etc. If you want to become a carver, check my lessons; I cover the full spectrum of wood carving types.
What is the best way to store your tools?
Keep your tools clean! Rust can be an issue with woodcarving tools. To prevent it, keep your tools dry. Avoid storing them in the garage if it's humid where you live. You can also use machine oil to ward off rust. Occasionally wipe your chisels with an oily rag. Your tools should last many years. (Some of my tools are 300 years old)
