Which woodcarving tools do I need to purchase?
Regardless of whether you are starting your wood carving journey or have been carving for years, having the right tools is important! Save your money from being wasted on cheap tools. Many tools can be found in stores. Don't purchase them merely because they are inexpensive. Carving is supposed to be relaxing and not hard work. Kick off your wood carving with quality tools.

You own your tools—they belong to you because you bought them. However, you shouldn't fear or misuse them. They will serve you longer if you look after them, so here are some tips on how to do that:
– If you're a beginner who has never tried carving before, the first step is to learn everything you can about your hand tools and how they work before using them! If something feels off, watch the woodcarving video lessons at my school of wood carving on tools and sharpening over and over until you get it. This is especially important for sharpening your gouges and chip carving knife — you could harm the blade or ruin its edge by using anything other than a proper sharpening stone or machine. I talk about sharpening a lot in my video workshops.
How to use your tools safely?
– Be mindful of safety when working with wood carving tools such as chisels and gouges!
If you don't feel safe, put on safety gloves when using woodworking tools! Generally, traditional woodcarvers avoid power tools and only use them to get basswood or other carvable wood ready. Power tools come to mind for woodworkers when they think of safety. Yet, hand tools are also risky.
I am a trained woodcarver, and I have the knowledge. You can ask me how I know. At the beginning of your wood carving journey, you don't consider much; you just take your knife and start carving. Whittling is just one type of wood carving; there are many more. High relief, low relief, round carving, etc. If you want to become a carver, check my lessons; I cover the full spectrum of wood carving types.
What is the best way to store your tools?
Keep your tools clean! One problem with woodcarving tools is rust. To prevent rust, keep your tools in a dry place. You should NOT keep your tools in the garage if you live in a humid climate. Second, You can use machine oil to prevent rust. Just once in a while wipe your chisels with an oily rag. Your tools should last a lifetime. (Some of my tools are 300 years old)
