This may be one of the most complex questions.
What tools do I need for woodcarving?
No matter if you're starting wood carving or have done it before, good tools are necessary! Don't spend your money on low-quality tools. There are plenty of carving tools for sale. Don't get them only because they're affordable. Carving is a relaxing hobby and does not have to be a constant struggle. Use good tools to start wood carving.

Your tools are your tools—you bought them and they're yours. But that doesn't mean you should be afraid of them or abuse them. They will last longer if you take care of them, so here's some advice on how to do just that:
– If you are new to woodcarving and have never tried it before, the first step is to learn all you can about your hand tools and how they work before using them! If something seems off, watch the woodcarving video lessons at my wood carving school about tools and sharpening over and over until you get it. This is very important for sharpening your gouges and chip carving knife — you could harm the blade or mess up its edge if you use anything other than the right sharpening stone or machine. I discuss this a lot in my video workshops.
How can you safely use your tools?
– Safety should always be your top priority when using chisels and gouges for wood carving!
If you feel unsafe, wear safety gloves when working with woodworking tools! Traditional woodcarvers typically avoid power tools; they only use them to get basswood or other carvable wood ready. Power tools come to mind for woodworkers when they think of safety. Still, hand tools can be equally hazardous.
I am a seasoned woodcarver and I know my craft. Ask me how I know. At the beginning of your wood carving journey, you don't consider much; you just take your knife and start carving. Whittling is only one form of wood carving; there are lots of others. High relief, low relief, round carving, etc. If you wish to be a carver, look at my lessons; I teach every type of carving.
Best methods to store tools
Keep your tools clean! One problem with woodcarving tools is rust. To prevent rust, keep your tools in a dry place. You should NOT keep your tools in the garage if you live in a humid climate. Second, You can use machine oil to prevent rust. Just once in a while wipe your chisels with an oily rag. Your tools should last a lifetime. (Some of my tools are 300 years old)

Focus on an easy design first.
Start with an easy task
Pay attention to how the design is shaped
Test it first on a piece of scrap wood
Use a pattern to guide you
