This might be one of the hardest questions.
What woodcarving tools should I buy?
Whether you're new to wood carving or experienced, good tools are needed! Don't waste your money on cheap tools. There are many tools available. Don't buy them just because they are cheap. Wood carving can be relaxing and shouldn't be tough. Kick off your wood carving with quality tools.

The tools you have are yours since you purchased them. This doesn't mean you should be scared of them or treat them poorly. They will have a longer life if you maintain them well, so here's some guidance on how to do it:
– If you're a beginner who has never tried carving before, the first step is to learn everything you can about your hand tools and how they work before using them! If something feels off, watch the woodcarving video lessons at my school of wood carving on tools and sharpening over and over until you get it. This is especially important for sharpening your gouges and chip carving knife — you could harm the blade or ruin its edge by using anything other than a proper sharpening stone or machine. I talk about sharpening a lot in my video workshops.
Using your tools safely: How?
– Be mindful of safety when working with wood carving tools such as chisels and gouges!
If you feel unsafe, wear safety gloves when working with woodworking tools! Usually, traditional woodcarvers don't rely on power tools, except for getting basswood or another type of carvable wood ready. When considering safety, woodworkers usually think of power tools first. However, hand tools can be just as dangerous.
I am a seasoned woodcarver and I know my craft. Feel free to ask me how I know. Starting out in wood carving, you don't dwell on it; you just grab a knife and whittle. Whittling is merely one type of wood carving; there are others too. High relief carving, low relief carving, carving in the round, etc. If you want to become a carver, check my lessons; I cover the full spectrum of wood carving types.
What is the best way to store your tools?
Keep your tools clean! Rust can be an issue with woodcarving tools. To prevent it, keep your tools dry. Avoid storing them in the garage if it's humid where you live. You can also use machine oil to ward off rust. Occasionally wipe your chisels with an oily rag. Your tools should last many years. (Some of my tools are 300 years old)
