Which woodcarving tools do I need to purchase?
No matter if you're starting wood carving or have done it before, good tools are necessary! Don't waste your money on cheap tools. There are plenty of carving tools for sale. Do not buy them just because they look affordable. Carving is a relaxing hobby and does not have to be a constant struggle. Kick off your wood carving with quality tools.

You got your tools and they are yours. But that doesn't mean you should be scared of them or misuse them. They will last longer if you take good care of them, so here is some advice on how to do this:
– If you're new and haven't carved before, the first step is to learn everything you can about your hand tools and how they work before using them! If something doesn't seem right, rewatch the woodcarving video lessons at my school of wood carving on tools and sharpening until you understand. This is really important when it comes to sharpening your gouges and chip carving knife — you could damage the blade or ruin its edge with anything other than the proper sharpening stone or machine. I talk a lot about sharpening in my video workshops.
What is the safe way to use your tools?

If you don't feel safe, put on safety gloves when using woodworking tools! Usually, traditional woodcarvers don't rely on power tools, except for getting basswood or another type of carvable wood ready. And when woodworkers think about safety, they automatically think about power tools. Yet, hand tools are also risky.
I am a skilled woodcarver, and I understand this well. Inquire how I know. Starting out in wood carving, you don't dwell on it; you just grab a knife and whittle. How to store your tools?
Keep your tools clean! Rust is a common issue with woodcarving tools. To avoid it, store your tools in a dry place. Do not put them in the garage if you live somewhere humid. Also, apply machine oil to prevent rust. Once in a while, wipe your chisels with an oily rag. Your tools should last for many years. (Some of my tools are 300 years old)
