Regardless of whether you are starting your wood carving journey or have been carving for years, having the right tools is important! Don't waste your money on cheap tools. There are plenty of carving tools for sale. Don't get them only because they're affordable. Carving should be enjoyable and not a struggle. Start your carving journey with the right tools.

You got your tools and they are yours. But that doesn't mean you should be scared of them or misuse them. They will last longer if you take good care of them, so here is some advice on how to do this:
– If you're just starting out and have never carved before, the first thing you should do is learn as much as possible about your hand tools and how they work before using them! If something seems wrong, watch the woodcarving video lessons at my school of wood carving on tools and sharpening repeatedly until you understand. This is crucial for sharpening your gouges and chip carving knife — you could hurt the blade or mess up its edge by using anything other than a proper sharpening stone or machine. I cover this topic a lot in my video workshops.
What are the steps to use your tools safely?
– Always think about safety when working with wood carving tools like chisels and gouges!
Wear safety gloves if you feel unsafe while using woodworking tools! Traditional woodcarvers typically avoid power tools; they only use them to get basswood or other carvable wood ready. When considering safety, woodworkers usually think of power tools first. But hand tools could be as dangerous as power tools.
I am a professional woodcarver and I know what I am talking about. Ask me how I know. When you first start wood carving, you don't think about it; you simply take your knife and carve. Whittling is just one kind of wood carving; there are several more. High relief, low relief, and round carving. If you want to become a carver, check my lessons; I cover the full spectrum of wood carving types.
Ways to store your tools
Keep your tools clean! One problem with woodcarving tools is rust. To prevent rust, keep your tools in a dry place. You should NOT keep your tools in the garage if you live in a humid climate. Second, You can use machine oil to prevent rust. Just once in a while wipe your chisels with an oily rag. Your tools should last a lifetime. (Some of my tools are 300 years old)
