This could be one of the most challenging questions.
Which woodcarving tools do I need to purchase?
Does not matter if you just start a wood carving journey or carved for a while, good tools are a MUST! Don't spend your money on low-quality tools. There are many tools available. Don't get them only because they're affordable. Carving should be enjoyable and not a struggle. Kick off your wood carving with quality tools.

You own your tools—they belong to you because you bought them. However, you shouldn't fear or misuse them. They will serve you longer if you look after them, so here are some tips on how to do that:
– If you're a beginner who has never tried carving before, the first step is to learn everything you can about your hand tools and how they work before using them! If something feels off, watch the woodcarving video lessons at my school of wood carving on tools and sharpening over and over until you get it. This is especially important for sharpening your gouges and chip carving knife — you could harm the blade or ruin its edge by using anything other than a proper sharpening stone or machine. I talk about sharpening a lot in my video workshops.
Using your tools safely: How?
– Always remember safety when using wood carving tools like chisels and gouges!
If you don't feel safe, put on safety gloves when using woodworking tools! Most traditional woodcarvers don't use power tools; they just use them to prepare basswood or other carvable wood. When considering safety, woodworkers usually think of power tools first. Hand tools can also pose similar dangers.
I am a professional woodcarver and I know what I am talking about. Ask me how I know. When you first start wood carving, you don't think about it; you simply take your knife and carve. Whittling is only one form of wood carving; there are lots of others. High relief, low relief, carving in the round, and more. If you aim to become a carver, see my lessons; I cover all carving styles.
How should you store your tools?
Make sure your tools are clean! Rust is a problem for woodcarving tools. To avoid rust, keep them dry. Don't put them in the garage if it's humid where you live. You can also use machine oil to stop rust. Every now and then, wipe your chisels with an oily cloth. Your tools can last a very long time. (Some of mine are 300 years old)
