What are the best woodcarving tools to get?
Regardless of whether you are starting your wood carving journey or have been carving for years, having the right tools is important! Don't waste your money on cheap tools. There are a lot of tools available in the market. Avoid buying them simply because they are affordable. Carving is a relaxing hobby and does not have to be a constant struggle. Begin carving with proper tools.

The tools you have are yours since you purchased them. This doesn't mean you should be scared of them or treat them poorly. They will have a longer life if you maintain them well, so here's some guidance on how to do it:
– If You are a beginner and never carved before, step number one would be: Learn as much as possible about your hand tools and how they work before using them! If there's something that doesn't seem right, watch woodcarving video lessons at my school of wood carving about tools and sharpening again and again until you understand what's going on. This is especially important when it comes to sharpening your gouges and chip carving knife — you could damage the blade or ruin its edge by using anything other than a proper sharpening stone or sharpening machine. I am talking a lot in my video workshops about sharpening.
What are the steps to use your tools safely?
– Always keep safety in mind when using chisels and gouges for wood carving!
If you are worried about safety, use safety gloves while working with woodworking tools! Most traditional woodcarvers don't use power tools; they just use them to prepare basswood or other carvable wood. When considering safety, woodworkers usually think of power tools first. Yet, hand tools are also risky.
I am a seasoned woodcarver and I know my craft. Ask me how I know. When you first start wood carving, you don't think about it; you simply take your knife and carve. Whittling is just one type of wood carving; there are many more. High relief carving, low relief carving, carving in the round, etc. If you wish to be a carver, look at my lessons; I teach every type of carving.
How to store your tools?
Keep your tools clean! One problem with woodcarving tools is rust. To prevent rust, keep your tools in a dry place. You should NOT keep your tools in the garage if you live in a humid climate. Second, You can use machine oil to prevent rust. Just once in a while wipe your chisels with an oily rag. Your tools should last a lifetime. (Some of my tools are 300 years old)
