This could be one of the most challenging questions.
What woodcarving tools are necessary for me?
Regardless of whether you are starting your wood carving journey or have been carving for years, having the right tools is important! Avoid spending money on cheap carving tools. You will find many tools out there. Don't get them only because they're affordable. Carving should be enjoyable and not a struggle. Begin wood carving with good tools.

You own your tools—they belong to you because you bought them. However, you shouldn't fear or misuse them. They will serve you longer if you look after them, so here are some tips on how to do that:
– If you're just starting out and have never carved before, the first thing you should do is learn as much as possible about your hand tools and how they work before using them! If something seems wrong, watch the woodcarving video lessons at my school of wood carving on tools and sharpening repeatedly until you understand. This is crucial for sharpening your gouges and chip carving knife — you could hurt the blade or mess up its edge by using anything other than a proper sharpening stone or machine. I cover this topic a lot in my video workshops.
Using your tools safely: How?
– Be mindful of safety when working with wood carving tools such as chisels and gouges!
Wear safety gloves if you feel unsafe while using woodworking tools! Traditional Woodcarvers usually do not use power tools, only to prepare basswood or another type of carvable lumber before carving. And when woodworkers think about safety, they automatically think about power tools. Still, hand tools can be equally hazardous.
I am a professional woodcarver and I know what I am talking about. Feel free to ask me how I know. Starting out in wood carving, you don't dwell on it; you just grab a knife and whittle. Whittling is just one kind of wood carving; there are several more. High relief carving, low relief carving, round carving, and so on. If you want to become a carver, check my lessons; I cover the full spectrum of wood carving types.
How should you store your tools?
Keep your tools clean! Woodcarving tools might get rusty. To stop rust, keep them in a dry spot. Do not store them in the garage if it's humid where you live. Also, you can use machine oil to prevent rust. Sometimes wipe your chisels with an oily rag. Your tools should last a lifetime. (Some of mine are 300 years old)
