What are the best woodcarving tools to get?
Whether you're new to wood carving or experienced, good tools are needed! Avoid spending money on cheap carving tools. Many tools can be found in stores. Don't get them only because they're affordable. Carving is meant to be relaxing and shouldn't be difficult. Kick off your wood carving with quality tools.

You got your tools and they are yours. But that doesn't mean you should be scared of them or misuse them. They will last longer if you take good care of them, so here is some advice on how to do this:
– If you're new to carving and haven't tried it before, the first step is to learn all you can about your hand tools and how they work before using them! If something doesn't seem right, watch the woodcarving video lessons at my school of wood carving about tools and sharpening until you understand. This is crucial for sharpening your gouges and chip carving knife — you could damage the blade or mess up its edge if you use anything other than a proper sharpening stone or machine. I discuss sharpening a lot in my video workshops.
What are the steps to use your tools safely?
– Always keep safety in mind when using chisels and gouges for wood carving!
If you feel unsafe, wear safety gloves when working with woodworking tools! Usually, traditional woodcarvers don't rely on power tools, except for getting basswood or another type of carvable wood ready. Power tools come to mind for woodworkers when they think of safety. Hand tools can also pose similar dangers.
I am a seasoned woodcarver and I know my craft. You can ask me how I know. When you just start a wood carving journey, you don't really think about this, you just grab your chip carving knife and start whittling away. Whittling is merely one type of wood carving; there are others too. High relief, low relief, carving in the round, and more. If you want to learn wood carving, check my lessons; I teach all types.
Storing your tools properly
Make sure your tools are clean! Rust is a problem for woodcarving tools. To avoid rust, keep them dry. Don't put them in the garage if it's humid where you live. You can also use machine oil to stop rust. Every now and then, wipe your chisels with an oily cloth. Your tools can last a very long time. (Some of mine are 300 years old)
