This is possibly one of the trickiest questions.
What tools do I need for woodcarving?
Whether you're new to wood carving or experienced, good tools are needed! Don't spend your money on low-quality tools. You will find many tools out there. Don't get them only because they're affordable. Carving is a relaxing hobby and does not have to be a constant struggle. Start a wood carving journey with good tools.

You own your tools—they belong to you because you bought them. However, you shouldn't fear or misuse them. They will serve you longer if you look after them, so here are some tips on how to do that:
– If you are new to woodcarving and have never tried it before, the first step is to learn all you can about your hand tools and how they work before using them! If something seems off, watch the woodcarving video lessons at my wood carving school about tools and sharpening over and over until you get it. This is very important for sharpening your gouges and chip carving knife — you could harm the blade or mess up its edge if you use anything other than the right sharpening stone or machine. I discuss this a lot in my video workshops.
How can you safely use your tools?
– Always remember safety when using wood carving tools like chisels and gouges!
If you don't feel safe, put on safety gloves when using woodworking tools! Most traditional woodcarvers don't use power tools; they just use them to prepare basswood or other carvable wood. Power tools come to mind for woodworkers when they think of safety. Still, hand tools can be equally hazardous.
I am a skilled woodcarver, and I understand this well. Inquire how I know. Starting out in wood carving, you don't dwell on it; you just grab a knife and whittle. Whittling is merely one type of wood carving; there are others too. High relief carving, low relief carving, carving in the round, etc. If you wish to be a carver, look at my lessons; I teach every type of carving.
Best methods to store tools
Keep your tools clean! Woodcarving tools might get rusty. To stop rust, keep them in a dry spot. Do not store them in the garage if it's humid where you live. Also, you can use machine oil to prevent rust. Sometimes wipe your chisels with an oily rag. Your tools should last a lifetime. (Some of mine are 300 years old)
