This is possibly one of the trickiest questions.
What woodcarving tools are necessary for me?
Regardless of whether you are starting your wood carving journey or have been carving for years, having the right tools is important! Avoid spending money on cheap carving tools. There are many tools available. Don't purchase them merely because they are inexpensive. Carving is supposed to be relaxing and not hard work. Use good tools to start wood carving.

You own your tools—they belong to you because you bought them. However, you shouldn't fear or misuse them. They will serve you longer if you look after them, so here are some tips on how to do that:
– If you're new to carving and haven't tried it before, the first step is to learn all you can about your hand tools and how they work before using them! If something doesn't seem right, watch the woodcarving video lessons at my school of wood carving about tools and sharpening until you understand. This is crucial for sharpening your gouges and chip carving knife — you could damage the blade or mess up its edge if you use anything other than a proper sharpening stone or machine. I discuss sharpening a lot in my video workshops.
How to use your tools safely?
– Be mindful of safety when working with wood carving tools such as chisels and gouges!
Feel unsafe? Wear safety gloves when doing woodworking! Usually, traditional woodcarvers don't rely on power tools, except for getting basswood or another type of carvable wood ready. Woodworkers often consider power tools when thinking of safety. However, hand tools can be just as dangerous.
I am a trained woodcarver, and I have the knowledge. Feel free to ask me how I know. When you start carving wood, you don't think much about it; you just pick up your knife and begin. Whittling is only one form of wood carving; there are lots of others. High relief, low relief, and round carving. If you want to learn wood carving, check my lessons; I teach all types.
How to store your tools?
Keep your tools clean! Woodcarving tools might get rusty. To stop rust, keep them in a dry spot. Do not store them in the garage if it's humid where you live. Also, you can use machine oil to prevent rust. Sometimes wipe your chisels with an oily rag. Your tools should last a lifetime. (Some of mine are 300 years old)
