______
This may be one of the most complex questions.
What woodcarving tools are necessary for me?
No matter if you're starting wood carving or have done it before, good tools are necessary! Save your money from being wasted on cheap tools. The market has many tools available. Refrain from buying them just because they seem cheap. Wood carving can be relaxing and shouldn't be tough. Start your carving journey with the right tools.

Your tools are yours since you bought them. But don't be afraid of them or handle them badly. They will last longer if you look after them, so here's some advice on how to do that:
– If you're a beginner who has never tried carving before, the first step is to learn everything you can about your hand tools and how they work before using them! If something feels off, watch the woodcarving video lessons at my school of wood carving on tools and sharpening over and over until you get it. This is especially important for sharpening your gouges and chip carving knife — you could harm the blade or ruin its edge by using anything other than a proper sharpening stone or machine. I talk about sharpening a lot in my video workshops.
How should you use your tools safely?
– Safety should always be your top priority when using chisels and gouges for wood carving!
If you feel unsafe, wear safety gloves when working with woodworking tools! Generally, traditional woodcarvers avoid power tools and only use them to get basswood or other carvable wood ready. When considering safety, woodworkers usually think of power tools first. Hand tools might be just as unsafe as power tools.
I am a trained woodcarver, and I have the knowledge. You can ask me how I know. When you just start a wood carving journey, you don't really think about this, you just grab your chip carving knife and start whittling away. Whittling is one type of wood carving; plenty others exist. High relief, low relief, round carving, etc. If you wish to be a carver, look at my lessons; I teach every type of carving.
Storing your tools properly
Make sure your tools are clean! Rust is a problem for woodcarving tools. To avoid rust, keep them dry. Don't put them in the garage if it's humid where you live. You can also use machine oil to stop rust. Every now and then, wipe your chisels with an oily cloth. Your tools can last a very long time. (Some of mine are 300 years old)
