This is probably one of the most difficult question.
What tools do I need for woodcarving?
It doesn't matter if you are just beginning wood carving or have been at it for some time, quality tools are crucial! Don't spend your money on low-quality tools. There are plenty of carving tools for sale. Don't get them only because they're affordable. Carving is a relaxing hobby and does not have to be a constant struggle. Begin wood carving with good tools.

Your tools are yours since you bought them. But don't be afraid of them or handle them badly. They will last longer if you look after them, so here's some advice on how to do that:
– If you're new and haven't carved before, the first step is to learn everything you can about your hand tools and how they work before using them! If something doesn't seem right, rewatch the woodcarving video lessons at my school of wood carving on tools and sharpening until you understand. This is really important when it comes to sharpening your gouges and chip carving knife — you could damage the blade or ruin its edge with anything other than the proper sharpening stone or machine. I talk a lot about sharpening in my video workshops.
How can you safely use your tools?
– Always remember safety when using wood carving tools like chisels and gouges!
Feel unsafe? Wear safety gloves when doing woodworking! Traditional Woodcarvers usually do not use power tools, only to prepare basswood or another type of carvable lumber before carving. For woodworkers, safety is usually linked with power tools. Hand tools might be just as unsafe as power tools.
I am an expert woodcarver, and I speak from experience. You can ask me how I know. When you first start wood carving, you don't think about it; you simply take your knife and carve. Whittling is only one form of wood carving; there are lots of others. High relief, low relief, round carving, etc. If you wish to be a carver, look at my lessons; I teach every type of carving.
How should you store your tools?
Keep your tools clean! Rust is a common issue with woodcarving tools. To avoid it, store your tools in a dry place. Do not put them in the garage if you live somewhere humid. Also, apply machine oil to prevent rust. Once in a while, wipe your chisels with an oily rag. Your tools should last for many years. (Some of my tools are 300 years old)
