______
This is likely one of the toughest questions.
What woodcarving tools are necessary for me?
It doesn't matter if you are just beginning wood carving or have been at it for some time, quality tools are crucial! Do not waste money on inexpensive carving tools. You will find many tools out there. Don't purchase them merely because they are inexpensive. Carving should be enjoyable and not a struggle. Begin wood carving with good tools.

The tools you have are yours since you purchased them. This doesn't mean you should be scared of them or treat them poorly. They will have a longer life if you maintain them well, so here's some guidance on how to do it:
– If you're a beginner who has never tried carving before, the first step is to learn everything you can about your hand tools and how they work before using them! If something feels off, watch the woodcarving video lessons at my school of wood carving on tools and sharpening over and over until you get it. This is especially important for sharpening your gouges and chip carving knife — you could harm the blade or ruin its edge by using anything other than a proper sharpening stone or machine. I talk about sharpening a lot in my video workshops.
Using your tools safely: How?
– Make sure to think about safety whenever you use chisels and gouges for wood carving!
Feel unsafe? Wear safety gloves when doing woodworking! Usually, traditional woodcarvers don't rely on power tools, except for getting basswood or another type of carvable wood ready. And when woodworkers think about safety, they automatically think about power tools. Hand tools can also pose similar dangers.
I am an expert woodcarver, and I speak from experience. Ask me how I know. When you start carving wood, you don't think much about it; you just pick up your knife and begin. Whittling is merely one type of wood carving; there are others too. High relief, low relief, and round carving. If you wish to be a carver, look at my lessons; I teach every type of carving.
Best methods to store tools
Keep your tools clean! One problem with woodcarving tools is rust. To prevent rust, keep your tools in a dry place. You should NOT keep your tools in the garage if you live in a humid climate. Second, You can use machine oil to prevent rust. Just once in a while wipe your chisels with an oily rag. Your tools should last a lifetime. (Some of my tools are 300 years old)
