This is likely one of the toughest questions.
What woodcarving tools are necessary for me?
Whether you are new to wood carving or have been doing it for a while, having good tools is essential! Do not waste money on inexpensive carving tools. There are many tools available. Don't get them only because they're affordable. Carving is supposed to be relaxing and not hard work. Begin wood carving with good tools.

You own your tools—they belong to you because you bought them. However, you shouldn't fear or misuse them. They will serve you longer if you look after them, so here are some tips on how to do that:
– If you're new and haven't carved before, the first step is to learn everything you can about your hand tools and how they work before using them! If something doesn't seem right, rewatch the woodcarving video lessons at my school of wood carving on tools and sharpening until you understand. This is really important when it comes to sharpening your gouges and chip carving knife — you could damage the blade or ruin its edge with anything other than the proper sharpening stone or machine. I talk a lot about sharpening in my video workshops.
What are the steps to use your tools safely?
– Always remember safety when using wood carving tools like chisels and gouges!
When you feel unsafe, make sure to wear safety gloves when handling woodworking tools! Traditional Woodcarvers usually do not use power tools, only to prepare basswood or another type of carvable lumber before carving. When considering safety, woodworkers usually think of power tools first. However, hand tools can be just as dangerous.
I am a professional woodcarver and I know what I am talking about. Feel free to ask me how I know. Starting out in wood carving, you don't dwell on it; you just grab a knife and whittle. Whittling is one type of wood carving; plenty others exist. High relief carving, low relief carving, carving in the round, etc. If you want to learn wood carving, check my lessons; I teach all types.
How to store your tools?
Keep your tools clean! Woodcarving tools can rust. To stop rust, keep your tools dry. Don't store them in the garage if it's humid where you live. Also, use machine oil to stop rust. Occasionally wipe your chisels with an oily cloth. Your tools can last forever. (Some of mine are 300 years old)
