If I were a beginner, what would be the best carving to do?

It's not hard to begin wood carving.

Every summer, I stayed with my grandparents in a small village by the Volga river in Russia. I recall when I was six years old. I snuck inside my grandfather's workshop, and I found one woodworking chisel. I didn't know what the tool was, but I knew it had a cutting edge and thought I could cut something with it. Long story short, it was the start of my carving journey. I didn't carve wood that day, though. I found a white brick and started to chisel away. I really had no idea what I was carving. I simply enjoyed the process. At the end of the day, I could see a human face in that brick. I don't remember what I felt, joy or frustration, but I know now it was the start of my lifelong journey as a carver.

Afterward, I worked with wood and enjoyed it more than brick. I decided. I'll carve wood, not brick anymore!

I knew nothing about types of wood or about different types of wood carving. How chip carving differs from relief carving? The jargon was all very confusing to me. I did not know any wood carving basics.

I was very lucky with both sides of my family. My grandpa had a small shop and a few workbenches, and I could spend time with him and see how he worked. For him, his shop was a “hiding place” from his wife, my grandma. But she knew where to find him.On my father's side, the family has a rich history of fine woodworkers and furniture makers. One of my great-grandfathers was a craftsman for a royal house in Saint Petersburg, Russia. My Grandma shared stories about her childhood in her dad's woodworking shop.

She remembered the songs of her father. He sang songs while working with wood.My grandfather gave me my first chisel, and my grandmother gave me my first whittling knife. It was really a pocket knife from the USSR, not a whittling knife. Pocket knives work well for basic carving. Those two tools were my carving tools. I didn't have a gouge or any power tools. Not even a proper chip carving knife. A simple pocket knife is enough to make something beautiful.

Back then, I didn't know woodcarving would be so significant in my life. Today, I carve for collectors around the globe and private homes. I didn't realize woodcarving could be so rewarding.

Ask yourself first what is more appealing to you: a spoon or relief carvings. Sometimes a beginner doesn't realize how big the difference is between carving a wooden spoon and carving some 3-dimensional sculpture with a gouge and a mallet. Also known as carving in the round.

Nature itself runs on the continuous interaction of opposites—earth and fire, sun and moon, male and female, dark and light.

Any tips for my first carving project?

Consider another crucial question. What carving style do I prefer? But that's not the only question you need to ask. Another question to think about is: what tools do you own? Do you have basic carving tools or only a knife? Some of you have only a chainsaw :). You can carve with a chainsaw, but not a spoon.

My recommendation is to try various styles. Once more, what hand tools do you own? If you only have a chip carving knife, spoon carving is out, but you can still carve other things.

Dopamine works like transmission fluid: if there’s not enough, as is the case in people with ADHD, attention can’t easily be shifted or can only be shifted all the way into high gear.

(John J. Ratey and Eric Hagerman, Spark)

Dopamine in woodcarving is like oil for your carving tools: if there’s not enough, like those with ADHD, your focus can either get stuck or suddenly become very sharp.
