What carving is best for a beginner?

Starting wood carving is pretty easy.

Every summer I stayed with my grandparents in a small Russian village by the Volga river. I remember when I was six years old. I sneaked into my grandfather's workshop and discovered a woodworking chisel. I didn't know what the tool was, but I saw it had a sharp edge and guessed I could cut something with it. To make a long story short, it was the beginning of my journey in the world of carving. I didn't carve wood that day, though. I found a white brick and began to “chisel away”. I really didn't have any idea what I was carving. I just liked the process. By the end of the day, I could identify a human face in that brick. I don't really remember if I felt joy or frustration, but I know now it was the start of my lifelong journey as a carver.

Later, I tried wood and liked it much more than brick. I made up my mind. I will carve wood instead of brick!

I knew nothing about types of wood or about different types of wood carving. What sets chip carving apart from relief carving? All those complicated terms confused me. I didn't know any basics of wood carving.

I was really lucky with both sides of my family. My grandpa had a little shop and a few workbenches, and I could hang out with him and see how he did things. To him, his shop was a “hiding spot” from his wife, my grandma. But of course, she knew where to find him.The other side of my family, my father's side, is known for their skill in woodworking and furniture making. A great-grandfather of mine was a furniture maker for a royal house in Saint Petersburg, Russia. My Granny shared memories of her childhood in her dad's woodworking shop.

She remembered the songs of her father. He sang songs while working with wood.My grandfather gave me my first chisel, and my grandmother gave me my first whittling knife. It was really a pocket knife from the USSR, not a whittling knife. Pocket knives work well for basic carving. Those two tools were my carving tools. I didn't have a gouge or any power tools. Not even a proper chip carving knife. A simple pocket knife is enough to make something beautiful.

Back then, I didn't know woodcarving would be so significant in my life. Today, I carve for collectors around the globe and private homes. I didn't realize woodcarving could be so rewarding.

Think about what you like more: a spoon or relief carvings. Many times, beginners don't understand the big difference between carving a wooden spoon and carving a 3D sculpture with a gouge and a mallet. This is also known as carving in the round.

Nature itself runs on the continuous interaction of opposites—earth and fire, sun and moon, male and female, dark and light.

How do I start my first carving project?

Ponder another vital question. What carving style do I enjoy? Yet, this isn't the only question to consider. Another question is: what tools do you have? Do you possess basic wood carving tools or just a knife? Some people only have a chainsaw :). You can do a chainsaw carving but with a chainsaw, you can't carve a spoon.

I advise experimenting with various carving styles. Remember, what hand tools do you have? If you only possess a chip carving knife, you can't do spoon carving, but you can still carve other things.

Dopamine functions like transmission fluid: when there’s too little, like in people with ADHD, it’s tough to shift attention or it goes straight to high gear.

(John J. Ratey and Eric Hagerman, Spark)

Dopamine in woodcarving is like oil for your carving tools: without enough, like people with ADHD, your focus can get stuck or suddenly become intensely focused.
