What's a good carving project for a beginner?

It's not hard to begin wood carving.

Every summer, I spent time with my grandparents in a small village by the Volga river in Russia. I recall when I was six years old. I sneaked into my grandfather's workshop and discovered a woodworking chisel. I didn't know what the tool was, but I knew it had a sharp edge and I could probably cut something with it. Long story short, it was the start of my journey in carving. I didn't carve wood that day, though. I found a white brick and started to chisel away. I had no idea what I was carving. I just enjoyed it. At the end of the day, I could see a human face in that brick. I don't really remember what I felt, joy or frustration, but I know now it was the start of my lifelong journey as a carver.

Then, I worked with wood and preferred it over brick. I decided. I'll carve wood, not brick!

I didn't know anything about different kinds of wood or wood carving. How do chip carving and relief carving differ? The jargon was all very confusing to me. I was unaware of the fundamental concepts of wood carving.

I was very lucky with both sides of my family. My grandpa had a small shop and a few workbenches, and I could spend time with him and see how he worked. For him, his shop was a “hiding place” from his wife, my grandma. But she knew where to find him.On my father's side, the family has a rich history of fine woodworkers and furniture makers. One of my great-grandfathers was a craftsman for a royal house in Saint Petersburg, Russia. My Grandmother shared stories of her childhood in her father's woodworking shop.

She recalled the songs her father used to sing. He sang as he worked with the wood.My grandfather gave me my first chisel, and my grandmother gave me my first whittling knife. Actually, it was a pocket knife from the USSR, not a whittling knife. Pocket knives are good for simple carving. Those were my carving tools. I didn't have a gouge or any power tools. Not even a real chip carving knife. A basic pocket knife is enough to create something beautiful.

Back in the day, I didn't know woodcarving would be such a big part of my life. Now, I carve for collectors all over the world and private homes. I never thought woodcarving could be so satisfying.

What carving project is best for a beginner?

Decide what you find more interesting: a spoon or relief carvings. Sometimes a beginner doesn't realize how big the difference is between carving a wooden spoon and carving some 3-dimensional sculpture with a gouge and a mallet. Also known as carving in the round.

Nature itself acts through the constant balance of opposites—earth and fire, sun and moon, male and female, dark and light.

How do I start my first carving project?

Think about another key question. What carving style appeals to me? But this is not the only question you have to ask yourself. Another question is: what tools are available to you? Do you have basic carving tools or only a knife? Some of you have only a chainsaw :). You can do chainsaw carving but not spoon carving.

My recommendation is to try various styles. Once more, what hand tools do you own? If all you have is a chip carving knife, you can't carve a spoon, but you can carve other items.

Dopamine functions like transmission fluid: when there’s too little, like in people with ADHD, it’s tough to shift attention or it goes straight to high gear.

(John J. Ratey and Eric Hagerman, Spark)

Dopamine in woodcarving is like oil for your carving tools: without enough, similar to people with ADHD, your focus can either freeze or suddenly become intensely focused.
