It doesn't matter if you are just beginning wood carving or have been at it for some time, quality tools are crucial! Do not waste money on inexpensive carving tools. You will find many tools out there. Do not buy them just because they look affordable. Wood carving is a relaxing hobby and shouldn't be hard. Begin wood carving with good tools.

The tools you have are yours since you purchased them. This doesn't mean you should be scared of them or treat them poorly. They will have a longer life if you maintain them well, so here's some guidance on how to do it:
– If you're just starting out and have never carved before, the first thing you should do is learn as much as possible about your hand tools and how they work before using them! If something seems wrong, watch the woodcarving video lessons at my school of wood carving on tools and sharpening repeatedly until you understand. This is crucial for sharpening your gouges and chip carving knife — you could hurt the blade or mess up its edge by using anything other than a proper sharpening stone or machine. I cover this topic a lot in my video workshops.

If you feel unsafe, wear safety gloves when working with woodworking tools! Traditional woodcarvers rarely use power tools, except to prepare basswood or another carvable wood. When considering safety, woodworkers usually think of power tools first. Hand tools can also pose similar dangers.

When you just start a wood carving journey, you don't really think about this, you just grab your chip carving knife and start whittling away. Ways to store your tools
Keep your tools clean! One problem with woodcarving tools is rust. To prevent rust, keep your tools in a dry place. You should NOT keep your tools in the garage if you live in a humid climate. Second, You can use machine oil to prevent rust. Just once in a while wipe your chisels with an oily rag. Your tools should last a lifetime. (Some of my tools are 300 years old)
