This might be one of the hardest questions.
Which woodcarving tools do I need to purchase?
Whether you are new to wood carving or have been doing it for a while, having good tools is essential! Don't spend your money on low-quality tools. There are many tools available. Do not buy them just because they look affordable. Carving is a relaxing hobby and does not have to be a constant struggle. Begin wood carving with good tools.

These tools are yours because you bought them. But don't be scared of them or use them wrongly. They will last longer if you care for them properly, so here is some advice on how to do it:
– If you're new and haven't carved before, the first step is to learn everything you can about your hand tools and how they work before using them! If something doesn't seem right, rewatch the woodcarving video lessons at my school of wood carving on tools and sharpening until you understand. This is really important when it comes to sharpening your gouges and chip carving knife — you could damage the blade or ruin its edge with anything other than the proper sharpening stone or machine. I talk a lot about sharpening in my video workshops.
What is the safe way to use your tools?
– Always remember safety when using wood carving tools like chisels and gouges!
If you are worried about safety, use safety gloves while working with woodworking tools! Traditional woodcarvers rarely use power tools, except to prepare basswood or another carvable wood. When considering safety, woodworkers usually think of power tools first. However, hand tools can be just as dangerous.
I am a professional woodcarver and I know what I am talking about. Feel free to ask me how I know. When you start carving wood, you don't think much about it; you just pick up your knife and begin. Whittling is merely one type of wood carving; there are others too. High relief, low relief, carving in the round, and more. If you want to learn wood carving, check my lessons; I teach all types.
Storing your tools properly
Make sure your tools are clean! Rust is a problem for woodcarving tools. To avoid rust, keep them dry. Don't put them in the garage if it's humid where you live. You can also use machine oil to stop rust. Every now and then, wipe your chisels with an oily cloth. Your tools can last a very long time. (Some of mine are 300 years old)
