Which tools should I get for woodcarving?
Regardless of whether you are starting your wood carving journey or have been carving for years, having the right tools is important! Don't spend your money on low-quality tools. There are a lot of tools available in the market. Don't get them only because they're affordable. Wood carving can be relaxing and shouldn't be tough. Kick off your wood carving with quality tools.

You own your tools—they belong to you because you bought them. However, you shouldn't fear or misuse them. They will serve you longer if you look after them, so here are some tips on how to do that:
– If You are a beginner and never carved before, step number one would be: Learn as much as possible about your hand tools and how they work before using them! If there's something that doesn't seem right, watch woodcarving video lessons at my school of wood carving about tools and sharpening again and again until you understand what's going on. This is especially important when it comes to sharpening your gouges and chip carving knife — you could damage the blade or ruin its edge by using anything other than a proper sharpening stone or sharpening machine. I am talking a lot in my video workshops about sharpening.
How to use your tools safely?
– Safety should always be your top priority when using chisels and gouges for wood carving!
If you don't feel safe, put on safety gloves when using woodworking tools! Generally, traditional woodcarvers avoid power tools and only use them to get basswood or other carvable wood ready. When considering safety, woodworkers usually think of power tools first. Hand tools can also pose similar dangers.
I am a seasoned woodcarver and I know my craft. Inquire how I know. Starting out in wood carving, you don't dwell on it; you just grab a knife and whittle. Whittling is one type of wood carving; plenty others exist. High relief, low relief, carving in the round, and more. If you aim to become a carver, see my lessons; I cover all carving styles.
Best methods to store tools
Keep your tools clean! One problem with woodcarving tools is rust. To prevent rust, keep your tools in a dry place. You should NOT keep your tools in the garage if you live in a humid climate. Second, You can use machine oil to prevent rust. Just once in a while wipe your chisels with an oily rag. Your tools should last a lifetime. (Some of my tools are 300 years old)

Focus on an easy design first.
