This is probably one of the most difficult question.
What are the best woodcarving tools to get?
Does not matter if you just start a wood carving journey or carved for a while, good tools are a MUST! Please do not waste your money on cheap carving tools. You will find many tools out there. Don't buy them just because they are cheap. Carving is a relaxing hobby and does not have to be a constant struggle. Begin wood carving with good tools.

The tools you have are yours since you purchased them. This doesn't mean you should be scared of them or treat them poorly. They will have a longer life if you maintain them well, so here's some guidance on how to do it:
– If you're just starting out and have never carved before, the first thing you should do is learn as much as possible about your hand tools and how they work before using them! If something seems wrong, watch the woodcarving video lessons at my school of wood carving on tools and sharpening repeatedly until you understand. This is crucial for sharpening your gouges and chip carving knife — you could hurt the blade or mess up its edge by using anything other than a proper sharpening stone or machine. I cover this topic a lot in my video workshops.
How should you use your tools safely?
– Always think about safety when working with wood carving tools like chisels and gouges!
If you feel unsafe, wear safety gloves when working with woodworking tools! Traditional Woodcarvers usually do not use power tools, only to prepare basswood or another type of carvable lumber before carving. For woodworkers, safety is usually linked with power tools. Yet, hand tools are also risky.
I am a professional woodcarver and I know what I am talking about. You can ask me how I know. When you just start a wood carving journey, you don't really think about this, you just grab your chip carving knife and start whittling away. Whittling is just one type of wood carving; there are many more. High relief, low relief, round carving, etc. If you want to become a carver, check my lessons; I cover the full spectrum of wood carving types.
Ways to store your tools
Make sure your tools are clean! Rust is a problem for woodcarving tools. To avoid rust, keep them dry. Don't put them in the garage if it's humid where you live. You can also use machine oil to stop rust. Every now and then, wipe your chisels with an oily cloth. Your tools can last a very long time. (Some of mine are 300 years old)

Focus on an easy design first.
Start with something simple
Look at the design's shape closely
Test it first on a piece of scrap wood
