The first month goes like this, and I will not dress it up. Nobody carves a Baroque panel in week one. The work is cutting lines in a scrap of basswood until they stop tearing.

Straight cuts. Then curved cuts. Then a simple leaf, and it will look like a fish. Cut that same leaf twenty times and around the fifteenth your hand stops arguing with you, and something clicks. Nobody gets around that part.

Buy fewer tools and better tools than you were planning to. A set of twelve cheap gouges in a roll will not hold an edge, and you will blame yourself.
