Which carving is good for a beginner?

Wood carving isn’t difficult to get into.

Every summer, I lived with my grandparents in a small village by the Volga river in Russia. I recall being six. I sneaked into my grandfather’s workshop and discovered a woodworking chisel. I didn’t know what the tool was, but I saw it had a sharp edge and thought I could cut something with it. To make a long story short, it was the start of my journey in carving. I didn’t carve wood that day, though. I found a white brick and started chiseling. I really had no idea what I was carving. I just enjoyed the process. At the end of the day, I could see a human face in that brick. I don’t remember if I felt joy or frustration, but I know now it was the beginning of my lifelong journey as a carver.

After that, I tried to work with a piece of wood and liked it a lot more than brick. I made the decision. I will carve wood and no longer the brick!

I was clueless about wood types and wood carving methods. How are chip carving and relief carving different? Those specialized words didn’t make much sense to me. I was unaware of the fundamental concepts of wood carving.

I was very fortunate with both sides of my family. My grandpa had a small shop and some workbenches, and I could hang out with him and watch how he worked. To him, his shop was a “hiding place” from his wife, my grandma. But she knew where to find him.My father’s side of the family has a history of skilled woodworkers and furniture makers. One of my great-grandfathers crafted furniture for a royal house in Saint Petersburg, Russia. My Grandmother shared stories of her childhood in her father’s woodworking shop.

She remembered her father’s songs. He was singing while working with wood. So, I got my first chisel from my grandfather, but my first whittling knife from my grandmother. Well, it was not really a whittling knife it was a pocket knife made in the USSR. Pocket knives are good for basic carving. Those two tools were my carving tools. I did not have any gouge or any power tools. Not even a real chip carving knife. A simple pocket knife to create something beautiful is enough.

Back then, I didn’t know woodcarving would be so significant in my life. Today, I carve for collectors around the globe and private homes. I didn’t realize woodcarving could be so rewarding.

What should I carve as a beginner?

Ask yourself first what is more appealing to you: a spoon or relief carvings. A lot of beginners don’t grasp the big difference between carving a wooden spoon and carving a 3-dimensional sculpture with a gouge and a mallet. This is also called carving in the round.

Nature itself functions by the ongoing interaction of opposites—earth and fire, sun and moon, male and female, dark and light.

Starting my first carving project. What steps should I take?

Ask another important question. What style of carving do I like? Yet, this isn’t the only question to consider. Another question to think about is: what tools do you own? Do you have basic carving tools or only a knife? Some might only have a chainsaw :). You can do chainsaw carving but not spoon carving.

My advice would be to experiment with different styles. Think about it, what hand tools do you have? If you have only a chip carving knife you can’t do “spoon carving”, but it does not mean you can’t do something else.

Dopamine operates like transmission fluid: if there’s a shortage, as with ADHD, attention shifting is difficult or jumps right to high gear.

(John J. Ratey and Eric Hagerman, Spark)

Dopamine in woodcarving is like the oil for your carving tools: if there’s not enough, similar to individuals with ADHD, your focus can either get stuck or suddenly jump to intense concentration.
