Cons with Woodcarving Classes in-person

But what do you do if you don't have $1000 for just a class itself? Do you even know how much classes cost? On average, a wood carving class costs around $900-$1050 USD for a 5-day wood carving class in most woodworking schools. For some of us, normal folk school fee is just too much. Plus, you have to buy hand tools for the class, which can add another $300-$600 USD to the cost. And don't forget about travel and accommodation expenses, which can range from $1500-$2000 depending on the location of the class and your preferred accommodation. And don't forget about travel costs, which can range from $500-$1000 not including transportation to and from the class. All in all, taking a wood carving class can be a significant financial investment. The total cost could be $3000-$4000 USD.

And it is a problem for many people.

Please understand that I am not trying to discourage you from taking in-person classes. There are certainly advantages to taking classes in person. As a woodcarving instructor for many years, I can tell you that it is a joy for both me and my students, who often become friends with me.

Advantages of taking woodcarving class in person

Ask yourself: “Is wood carving hard to learn on your own?” There are many woodcarvers in the world who never took a class and became very good at the craft. And said craft on purpose. Yes, wood carving definitely has a part you can call a craft. But I would lean more toward calling it art. Craft part you can probably learn on your own in the comfort of your home. But there are a lot of secrets and tips you can learn only by standing beside a Master woodcarver and silently observing. It is like an apprenticeship in medieval times. Traditional woodcarving was thought in Europe for centuries through apprenticeship without too much talking.

Apprentices would learn the trade by watching Masters and imitating them as closely as possible. They learned through endless repetition and hands-on work, with very little verbal instruction (the word “apprentice” itself comes from the Latin prehendere, meaning to grasp with the hand).

Mastery

In -person woodworking class instructor can give you individual attention and will point you to mistakes.

I remember when I was teaching at Austin School of Furniture a class. One of the students had a skill set more than the rest of the group. He is a musical instrument maker. He makes upright basses. Trevor his name. He probably read all of issues of woodcarving illustrated from the front page to the last. And yes, he could call himself a skillful woodcarver.

During one session I usually explain the principles of Design for wood carving. And those principles are very important if you want to take woodcarving to the next level. If you wish to elevate it from craft to art.

After one of our sessions, Trevor called me over to examine his design. It was an interesting show for the others present. A few people gathered together to watch me red-mark Trevor's piece of wood that he was working on. As I said, he was already a good carver, but it is not enough. You really need to know the other part, the artistic part (design for carving). An in-person class teacher can guide you in the right direction.

If you are learning without instruction, you really don't know about those mistakes. Your project may look good to you and the people around you, for the world may not. If you are ok with that, then yes, you don't need anyone teaching you. As long as you feel happy yourself about your project. It is your own journey anyway.

I agree that basic concepts and certain techniques such as chip carving can be learned on your own. There are many resources available online, including instructional videos and tutorials, that can help you learn these techniques. However, it's important to keep in mind that there is no substitute for hands-on instruction and the opportunity to ask questions and receive feedback in real-time. In-person classes can also provide a sense of community and camaraderie with other students who have similar interests. Ultimately, the decision to take a class in person or learn on your own will depend on your learning style and goals.

There are several benefits to taking a class in person, especially for more advanced concepts or techniques. In-person instruction allows you to ask questions and receive immediate feedback from an experienced instructor, which can be particularly helpful if you are struggling to understand a concept or technique. In-person classes also provide a structured learning environment and a set schedule, which can help you stay motivated and on track. Additionally, in-person classes can provide opportunities for hands-on learning, which can be especially useful for practical skills like wood carving.

Another benefit of in-person classes is the opportunity to learn from and interact with other students. You can share ideas, ask for and offer support, and learn from others' experiences. This can be a particularly valuable aspect of in-person learning for those who enjoy social interaction and being part of a community.

Overall, while it is possible to learn basic concepts and certain techniques on your own, in-person classes can provide a more comprehensive and immersive learning experience. They can be especially useful for more advanced concepts and techniques and for those who prefer hands-on learning and the opportunity to interact with others.

It's true that there are certain advantages to receiving in-person instruction that can't be replicated through online learning. One of the main benefits is the opportunity to ask questions and receive immediate feedback. When you have a question or need clarification on something, it can be helpful to have an instructor right there to address your concerns. This can be especially important if you are struggling to understand a concept or technique, as it allows you to get the help you need in real-time.

Another advantage of in-person instruction is the ability to observe demonstrations and ask questions as you go. This can be a valuable learning opportunity, as it allows you to see the techniques being performed and ask for more information or clarification as needed. In contrast, online learning often relies on pre-recorded videos or written instructions, which can make it more difficult to ask questions or get additional help when you need it.

Overall, while online learning has its own set of benefits, in-person instruction can provide a more comprehensive and interactive learning experience. It allows for immediate feedback and the opportunity to ask questions and receive help as needed, which can be especially valuable for those who are new to a subject or struggling to grasp certain concepts.

in Summary: Woodcarving classes near me or online

Woodcarving is a craft that combines both technical and artistic skills. However, finding woodcarving classes in your local area can be difficult, with the closest option often being hundreds of miles away. One option is to attend a woodcarving class at a woodworking school, but this can be a significant financial investment, with costs ranging from $3000-$4000 USD for a 5-day class. This includes the cost of the class itself, which is typically around $900-$1050 USD, as well as the cost of hand tools, travel, accommodation, and meals. In-person classes offer the opportunity for hands-on instruction and the ability to ask questions and receive immediate feedback, but they may not be accessible or affordable for everyone. Alternatively, you can try learning woodcarving on your own, but it may be more difficult to progress beyond basic concepts without the guidance of an instructor. Online classes can be a convenient and cost-effective option, and provide the same level of hands-on instruction and real-time feedback as in-person classes. Ultimately, the best option for you will depend on your learning style, goals, and availability.

One more important thing.

When you are taking a class in person, you are limited with time. It is a five-day class. Think about how big a project can you do in 5 days? Not really big. It is a “hummingbird project” if you compare it to the size and complexity of a project online. Online classes students may work on huge, multi-year projects. One of the projects I filmed “Venitian Room” took me two and a half years to carve and film. I filmed every detail of it. By watching close-ups students can refine even the smallest details.

Even more, students see a lot more than even me. I look at the detail in real size but he can look at it zoomed in on a screen. A 1mm gouge or chisel on a screen looks like 1 inch. :) And again. Just because there is no limit to how many times you are able to rewatch every topic, you can polish your skills much better. I guarantee that your decorative leaf will look much better if you are learning how to carve it online.

Also, another advantage of online classes is. No bodies around to destruct you and judge. Your first project may not look good and you understand it. But it is your project. And as long as you love it, you don't need the opinion of other “woodcarvers“. Before you become a “Pro” it could take time, and online you have unlimited time. As long as you have a sharpening stone by your side, a sharp chisel, maybe a “thumb guard” just in case ( and bandaids :)). You will be ok! Don't forget about the strop and the glove. All the basics are covered!

If you have any questions please contact me. I will email you back Sheri, John, Phillips … whoever you are.

And again, stop searching for Woodcarving Classes Near Me
