As a beginner, what should I carve?
If you're a beginner at carving, you might be wondering what kind of design you should carve. There are a few things to consider when choosing a design, such as the level of difficulty, the type of wood, and the size of the carving.
One option is to start with a simple design that is not too detailed. This will help you get a feel for the carving process and give you a chance to practice your skills. You can also try carving a design that is personal to you, such as your initials or a symbol that has meaning to you. You can also try to carve some kind of ornament on a cutting board. It will be a great addition to your kitchen decoration and you friends when they will see it will ask you: Did You make it? And You can proudly answer: Yes, I made it.
It will elevate your ego but on another hand explosion of endorphins is worth every bit of it. O– I probably have to tell you more about those hormones. While you carve you are experiencing a so-called “flow” or in other words, you are in a “zone”. You are losing your sense of time. According to research, I read. When You are in a zone your body explodes dopamine and endorphins. Which means You are fighting your bad moods in a peaceful war. You are becoming a more peaceful person. People around you will appreciate it a lot!
Your brain also develops and you will grow new brain cells.
Another thing to consider is the type of wood you want to use. Some woods are easier to carve than others, so if you're not sure where to start, ask someone at your local hardware store for advice. Once you've chosen a design and a piece of wood, it's time to get started! It is a common question,
What is the best wood for this hobby?
There is no definitive answer to this question as different people have different preferences. Some common woods used for carving include basswood, butternut, and tupelo. My preference is always Basswood. Basswood is the best for woodcarving because it is soft and easy to carve.
Cedar is another good option for woodcarving because it is also soft and easy to carve.
Oak is a harder wood, but it is still possible to carve.
Maple is also a hardwood, but it can be carved if you take your time.
One of the key things you need to know about carving is that it's all about taking away. The idea is to start with a big piece of wood that has the general shape of what you're trying to make, and then just keep taking off small pieces until you have your desired shape.
When it comes to carving wood, there are a few different ways to do it. You can use hand tools like chisels and gouges, or you can use power tools like a Dremel or an electric carving knife. Personally, I prefer using hand tools, but it really comes down to personal preference. In my online woodcarving school I teach to how to use traditional hand tool techniques. I am not a big fan of power tools for this hobby. Too much dust and it lacks life after sanding. By the way, it is another thing that I don't like about the power carving you have to sand it before applying the finish.
If you're just starting out, I would recommend doing some simple projects like carved signs or carved spoons. These will help you get a feel for how to carve and what kind of tools you'll need.

You'll also need some basic woodworking tools, pardon – woodcarving tools 🙂 it is still woodworking. A saw, mallet, carving knife, few gouges, and veiners are all you really need to get started. You might also want to invest in clamps. You need to clamp your piece of wood somehow.
As you become more experienced, you can add more tools to your collection. But for now, these basic tools. But for now, learn to carve with what You have. I started only with a knife.
