How do I start learning wood carving?

The fastest way to start learning wood carving is one knife, one board of basswood, and three angles you repeat until your hand knows them. My own master handed me a knife and nothing else. He held me there a long time before he ever gave me a gouge.

A man wrote to me before he signed up. He asked what level he would reach in one month, then in two, then in a year. Nobody can answer that. Progress is yours and it belongs to your hours, not to me and not to any video. What I can do is put the right thing in your hand on day one, in an order that does not build habits you later have to break. So if you want to start learning wood carving, the order below is the one my master used on me.

  • Buy one knife before you buy a set. Mine is a number 12 Pfeil chip carving knife, twenty years on my shelf, still working every day.
  • Basswood. The same tree is linden in Europe, lipa in Russia, lime timber in an English yard.
  • A kitchen table and two clamps make a shop. I have finished plenty of pieces that way.
  • The pencil goes first. Ten parts by ten parts across the block, then border bands at 10, 20 and 50 millimeters.
  • Learn to strop the week your tools arrive, because a dull edge crushes wood fibers instead of slicing them.

What do I need to buy before my first carve?

One knife, a plank of basswood, a pencil and a clamp will carry you through your first month. This is not romance about the old days. My master started me on a knife, and no gouge came out for a long while.

The first set I bought myself was Swiss Made, about half a thousand dollars for a few gouges, and I still did most of my paid work with the knife.

A number 12 Pfeil chip carving knife is what I hand a beginner. Twenty years on my shelf. It paid my rent and my food, and not in hundreds. Tens of thousands, from one blade. Cheap steel loses its edge in an afternoon or snaps, and then you blame yourself instead of the metal.

When you do move up to a set, three brands sit on my bench, and I take no money from any of them.

Keep your hand behind the blade, even when you are only steadying the board. That one rule decides whether you hurt yourself in week one, and federal guidance on hand tools says the same in flatter language.

Which wood should I start on?

Basswood, and there is not much of an argument to have about it. Almost no visible grain. Soft enough that a blade slides, firm enough that fine detail stays put. Europe calls the same tree lime or linden, Russia calls it lipa, and some places call it tea tree because the flowers brew well.

Old carvers used this wood too, which matters more than it sounds. On this side of the ocean the species is Tilia americana, and the Forest Service mapped its range and growth in more detail than a carver needs. Shrinkage numbers live in the Wood Handbook, measured by a published standard.

Buy a plank, never construction lumber. In the States, Michaels and Woodcraft both keep basswood planks on a shelf. Twenty millimeters is enough to practice on, though my cutting board blank was more than twice as thick, and a heavier piece moves less on you later. Leave the harder species alone while your hands are still learning, and read the measured numbers before you fall for a pretty board.

Do I have to draw before I carve?

You draw first, and my master spent more time on that than on any blade. He told me design is not drawing on paper. It is the laws of space, the rhythm, the repetition, and knowing what a tool can physically do. He taught me to think like a tool. That sentence took me years, and I am still not finished with it.

Skip the ruler on your first practice lines. Draw them freehand, badly, and let your hand learn what straight feels like. Pretend you own one knife and nothing else, the way a man did four thousand years ago, and put the line down anyway, because most of that material is leaving later. Crooked is fine.

For a real project, glue the paper drawing onto the block, or better, redraw it on the wood yourself. My Roman acanthus block was six inches by eight. Better that you draw it and get it wrong than trace it and learn nothing. This school runs the way an apprenticeship ran: watch what I do, then go and do it, the same way you would have stood in a shop three hundred years ago and repeated the master's movement until it was yours. Entertainment is not what I am here for.

How do I know where the lines go?

Divide the block into ten parts each way, then count six of those ten to land your focal point. Photographers use the rule of thirds and it works. Mine is older.

Nearly every piece of art I admire from history sits on the golden ratio, and Fibonacci, Leonardo and Archimedes each tried to name the same thing. Six parts out of ten gets close with a pencil and no arithmetic.

Before that, decide which way your eye travels. A Western eye starts at the left and moves down and across. An Eastern eye starts at the right. Russia has an Asian half and a European half, and I come from there, so on that panel I wanted a shape that pleased both. Sounds small. It decides where every leaf points.

Both diagonals carry names. Running up to the right is the baroque diagonal, and baroque here is not the style, it translates as strange. The other way is the sinister diagonal, and sinister only means left. Set a square on the diagonal, draw ninety degrees off it, and you have the true golden section of the whole composition. On my own panel I disliked how that looked, so back I went to six parts out of ten.

Borders come off the same sequence. One and one make two, two and one make three, three and two make five. My panel board was ten millimeters thick, so I left a ten millimeter band, then twenty, and carrying the run through thirty put my last line at fifty millimeters from the edge. Converting millimeters and inches is never clean, and twenty is not exactly three quarters of an inch. Close enough for a pencil. Why those numbers please the eye I cannot tell you, though the same proportion turns up in old buildings everywhere, and the full treatment is what the design course is for.

How do I carve my first clean groove?

Three angles do all the work: straight down, right and left. Practice them on scrap until you stop guessing at depth. Relief carving turns easy after that, because your hand already knows where the invisible line under the surface sits. This drill opens my first workshop.

The bench I work at has twenty millimeter holes drilled through it with Festool stop blocks dropped in, so a small block spins instead of being unclamped. Two clamps on a kitchen table do the same job slower.

Step 1, clamp the board and mark it

Draw one straight line across the grain, in three separate places. Across, not along. Clamp the board to whatever surface you own. No mallet comes into this drill, so a table is plenty.

Set the knife in your palm and squeeze tight, blade facing your body. Put the point on the mark and pull toward yourself, ninety degrees, straight down. Not deep. Do all three lines the same way before going on.

Step 3, come in from the right

Measure five millimeters out from the top of the line, near enough to three sixteenths of an inch, and call that your arch point. Angle the knife right. Pull toward yourself, feeling for where the first straight carve ended inside the wood.

Step 4, come in from the left

Flip the angle and repeat on the other side of the same line. Hold the knife like a pencil when the shape is small, and let a finger of the other hand support the blade so the arch stays true. Work with the grain and travel downhill, never against it, or the wood tears out ahead of your blade.

Step 5, go back and clean it

If the chip will not lift, do not pry at it with the point. Repeat the straight carve and it snaps out on its own. Then run the whole thing again from both sides toward the center, which teaches your hand how deep it travelled.

Expect to sweat. It is a workout, and twenty minutes in your forearm will say so. What the drill really trains is a feel for the invisible line under the surface, the place your right angle and your left angle have to meet. Once a hand knows where that line sits, relief carving stops being mysterious.

Depth is what beginners get wrong. On my flower rosette I marked a quarter inch exactly, plus one thirty second, then carried that line around the block with a marking gauge so I knew the floor I could not pass. Nine thirty seconds of an inch, or 7.14 millimeters.

Your first real project should be a thing you will actually use. Mine for beginners is a kitchen cutting board, ten inches by nearly thirteen, and ninety nine percent of it comes off with the one knife. Carving is an art of deduction, so you only ever take away, and a board has no undo button.

What should I practice after the first three grooves?

Turn the drill inside out: leave the shape standing and carve the ground away around it. Same knife, same board, opposite thinking. Those grooves were sunk into the surface. Now the leaf stays flat and high, and everything beside it goes down.

Draw an S line, not a sharp one, and hang a few leaves off it. Set the knife at a low angle right on a drawn line and follow it, then come from the other side and meet that first pass. A clean V drops out between them. Where the two passes meet has to be crisp, so if the waste will not release, run the same pass again instead of levering at it.

Then step out about five millimeters, near enough to three sixteenths of an inch, and outline the leaf again a little way off itself. That second line is what lifts the leaf off its background.

Check which way the grain runs before every pass. When it runs away from you, start at the top of the line and work down, because going uphill tears the fibers ahead of the edge instead of slicing them. Never let your hand get in front of the blade, even when you are only holding the board still, and wear eye protection, which costs nothing.

One move finishes it. Run a straight down pass along the center of each leaf, take a low pass into that line, and the leaf breaks into two planes that catch light differently. No punches on this kind of work. The old carvers had none, and there is no real ground here to punch anyway.

This is not chip carving and it is not true relief, since nothing sits on a proper background. Both of those grew out of it, and you find it on European work from the eighth and ninth centuries. Once your hand owns it you can run miles of molding. I have carved it on the sides of coffered ceilings, on furniture skirts, around window casings, and on the lids of jewelry boxes.

Why does the bevel angle matter more than the brand?

A low bevel lets your hand rest on the wood, and a high one makes you lift your elbow to carve at all. Most tools arrive ground high. Regrinding is the first thing I do to every gouge, and it changes more than whose name is on the handle.

The bevel on my number 7 by Ashley Iles, made in England, runs roughly half an inch back from the sharp end, with a small micro bevel at the tip. I keep two gouges of the same thickness and the same sweep on the bench, one reground and one straight from the box, and they do not behave alike. With the high one the tool rides on its heel, so you raise your hand almost to the elbow to make it carve anything. The low one lets your other hand lie flat on the wood, and the fine detail arrives.

How low? I cannot give you a number in degrees, but somewhere near five, and perhaps under it.

The trade is real, though. A hard wood like white oak wants the stronger, higher bevel, and I keep a tool ground that way for it, because a five degree edge in red oak has almost no metal behind it and will chip. Lime wood and basswood want the low one. The difference is density, and it is the whole reason one bevel cannot serve both.

How sharp does the edge have to be?

Sharp enough to slice and never crush, which is a higher bar than most beginners picture. Dull tools carve nothing. Absolutely nothing. Every tool I buy, any brand, high end or not, gets reshaped, resharpened and stropped before it touches wood.

Grinding the shape comes first, and that stage decides how the tool sits in your hand all day. Softer woods want as little angle as you can give them. Oak wants more. Even a gouge that arrives sharp keeps its factory edge for a day or two of real work, then it is yours to maintain. I sharpen on a machine because I carve for a living, though I still love doing it by hand.

Three stages go into it, and beginners usually skip two. Grinding the shape is the real labour. Then every single scratch the grinding left behind has to come out, one pass at a time. Polish last, to a mirror close enough to see your own face in the bevel. My setup is a Work Sharp: glass wheels with different abrasives, 80 grit on one side for grinding, and a two sided felt wheel with two pastes for the rest. A bench grinder will do that first stage and burn the tool doing it. If the edge turns blue you have killed it, and no amount of stropping brings it back.

Where do I start on my first real project?

Borders first, design second, and the borders are three pencil lines you can rule in five minutes. My beginner board runs about ten inches by nearly thirteen. A quarter inch in from every edge, another quarter inch inside that, then an eighth.

You do not actually need a rule for those lines, though I use one. Lay your middle finger against the edge of the board, hold the pencil at a fixed spot along that finger, and drag your hand down the edge. Your finger is the fence. It gives a better line than most beginners get off a ruler, and two thousand years ago nobody had the ruler. A thicker blank also moves less over the years, which is why mine measured two inches; the shrinkage figures behind that come out of the Forest Products Laboratory.

Then fill the middle. I drew a bird of paradise on mine, stylized the way the old work stylizes everything, straight onto the wood with an eraser at hand. The name for this kind of carving is curly carving and it earns it: curls everywhere, leaves and flowers dropped into the gaps, every line flowing into the next with no dead stops. I photograph the finished drawing and post it so a student can scale it to whatever board they own.

Ninety nine percent of that board comes off with the one knife. A gouge joins near the end, and only because a few shapes want a curve the blade cannot give.

How long before I am any good?

Longer than a month, shorter than you fear, and the number rests only on your hours. I belong to a gym and pay every month. Asking what my arms look like in sixty days when I am not going in would be foolish.

Young men come in, pump dumbbells one afternoon, then keep walking to the mirror to see what grew. Nothing grows in an afternoon.

Somebody once asked me what the richest place on earth is. People guess a country. The right answer is a cemetery, and it is full of talented people who never once used what they were given. Practice the angles and keep the edge bright. Read how long it takes honestly rather than hopefully. A corner of one room is enough, so short space is no excuse. Most trouble I see comes down to a handful of repeated mistakes, every one fixable in an evening.

Do I need a full set of gouges to begin?

One knife covers your first month, and a good deal longer than that. My teacher kept me on a single blade for a long stretch before he handed over a gouge, and I earned real money for years with that one tool. Buy a set later, when a shape you want defeats the knife.

How thick should my first board be?

Twenty millimeters is plenty for practice. The blank for my beginner cutting board ran a full two inches, which is far more than anyone needs, and I used it only because that block happened to be lying in the shop. Thicker stock stays flatter over the years, so take the heavy plank.

Is basswood the same thing as lime wood?

Same tree, different countries. Across Europe it goes by lime and by linden, England sells it as lime timber, Russia says lipa, and a few places call it tea tree because the flowers brew well. Whatever the label, you want almost no visible grain and a surface that keeps fine detail without crumbling.

Can I really learn this from video?

Watching on its own teaches nobody anything. Treat a lesson the way an apprentice treated a workshop three hundred years ago. Watch the movement, stop the video, repeat it on your own wood until the movement is yours. Then send me the result and I will tell you what went wrong.

How low should the bevel on my first gouge be?

Lower than it arrives. Factory grinds run high, which forces you to lift your elbow before the edge will carve at all. Mine sit somewhere near five degrees, and the bevel runs about half an inch behind the tip. Keep one tool ground higher and save it for oak.

Is a real workbench necessary to start?

A kitchen table and two clamps will carry you a long way. Mine has twenty millimeter holes with stop blocks dropped into them so a small block spins rather than being unclamped, which is convenience and not a requirement. Nobody swings a mallet in the first month anyway.

Am I going to hurt myself?

Keep your hand behind the blade and the risk drops close to nothing. Never put a finger in front of the edge, not even to steady the board, and pull the knife toward your body only with the blade facing you. Clamp the work down so both hands stay free.
